The HSFL League Office released the 2002 Pro Bowl roster early Thursday morning. The roster was determined by a
group of voters who were e-mailed ballots by the league.
The Team
Bob Glover-- Bob Glover was selected to the Pro Bowl for the third time in as many seasons, finishing second in the balloting.
Considered by many to be the most dangerous offensive player in the league, Glover managed to add a little defense to his
game this year. In the absence of a consistent running game, Glover had to carry his team for most of the season.
His 48 touchdown passes tied his own single season record set back in 2001, he also scored 7 touchdowns. On defense,
Glover led the league in interceptions for the second time in his career with 4 and also had a sack. He is also a contender
for Defensive Player of the Year as well as Most Valuable Player honors.
Matt Lams-- In his first season as a full-time player, Matt Lams earned his first selection to the Pro Bowl, winning the fifth
and final spot on the roster. Despite missing two games, Lams still made enough of an impression on the voters to be
selected. Missing time hurt his final statistical numbers, but when you consider the fact that he missed two games,
you can get a sense of his dominance. He still managed to finish the season tied for fifth with 10 touchdowns.
He also added a touchdown pass. The most electric player in the league did not have his contributions limited to offense.
Lams was one of the most fierce tacklers in the league and his defensive contributions played a huge role in his selection.
Lams is also in the running for Defensive Player of the Year.
Josh Neace-- Neace managed his third Pro Bowl selection, finishing fourth in the voting. Probably the most well-rounded player
in the league, Neace finished third in the league with 13 touchdowns. In addition, his 3 interceptions tied him for
second and his 2 sacks made him the league's co-sack leader for the second time in as many seasons. The most fearless
competitor in league history, Neace was a force on both sides of the ball as a receiver and playing virtually ever role on
Team 1's defense. He is also in the running for Defensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors.
Jeff Renn-- Renn joined Neace and Glover as the league's only three time Pro Bowl selections, and led in the voting. He carried
Team 2's offense on the ground for the entire season and his 22 touchdowns led the league. Renn also threw for
4 touchdown passes and added an interception on defense. His defensive role was limited at times, but his physical dominance
on offense played in his favor during the voting. With Team 2 winning their second straight Glover Bowl title, Renn
figures to get serious consideration for MVP.
Justin Sawicki-- The 2002 Rookie of the Year, Justin Sawicki was selected to his second straight Pro Bowl this year, finishing
third in the balloting. Arguably the league's top receiver, Sawicki finished second in the league with 14 touchdowns.
On defense, he tied for second in the league with 3 interceptions. Sawicki is also on the ballot as a candidate for
Defensive Player of the Year as well as Most Valuable Player.
Honorable Mention
Mike Arana-- After being selected to the Pro Bowl each of the last two years, Arana's performance fell off a little bit in 2003
and Matt Lams slid up into his spot. He scored 6 touchdowns and added an interception and 2 sacks on defense, good enough
for sixth in the Pro Bowl voting. He is in the running for Defensive Player of the Year as well.
Ryan Geib-- After being cast as a garbage player for his two previous HSFL seasons, Ryan Geib took a huge leap forward in 2003.
He finished fourth in the league with 11 touchdowns, he also threw for 2 touchdowns, had 2 interceptions, and tied for the
league lead with 2 sacks. He was a solid defender up front and made some contributions on offense, but the fact that
5 of his 11 touchdowns came in his one game that he played on Team 1 probably cost him in the voting. He is also a candidate
for Most Improved Player and Defensive Player of the Year.
