The 2003 HSFL Rookie of the Year Award winner was announced Wednesday evening by the League Office.
The winner was determined by a ballot e-mailed to ten people by the League Office
2nd Place-- Brian Potts (11 pts.)- Potts made his HSFL debut in 2002, but failed
to meet the necessary number of games to lose his rookie status. He returned in the beginning of 2003 and actually saw
his role on Team 2 increased. Used primarily as a blocker and run stopper, Potts had a solid year. He was given
a minimal number of touches on offense, and only scored one touchdown. Potts received one first-place vote for this
award.
1st Place-- Shaun Wehle (19 pts.)- Wehle made his HSFL debut back in 2001, but
played only one game and sat out the entire 2002 season before returning to the league in 2003. Wehle was a mainstay
in the early going of the season and had a legitimate shot at being selected to the Pro Bowl before injuring his knee in Week
6 and sitting out the remainder of the year. The former Hobart High School star was a dominant force on both sides
of the ball-- in the running game both as a runner and a blocker on offense, and on defense as a fierce tackling presence
that Team 1 has needed for years. Wehle scored 7 touchdowns and added an interception on the season. Shaun received
nine first-place votes for this award.
