Hobart, IN: The HSFL continued its 6th season with the leagues 6th game of the year. After a breakout week
in Week 8, John Berlin got the call to start at quarterback for Team 1 again, but struggled early. Team 2 jumped out
to a quick start and picked up an early 2-0 lead. Berlin failed to move the ball consistently, leading his team to only
3 first half touchdowns, giving Team 2 a commanding 5-3 lead at the half.
The question coming in to the game was just how long would Berlin be given if he was ineffective? The answer was
given to start the second half, as Bob Glover took the ball back in an attempt to rally his team to victory. Glover
faired better than Berlin, and with the help of two Chris Hott interceptions on back to back drives, Team 1 made the game
interesting again down the stretch. In the end, it was too much Jeff Renn and Justin Sawicki, and Team 2 took home their
fourth win of the season by a score of 10-8.
Josh Neace returned for Team 1 in Week 9, after taking Week 8 off to recover from some nagging injuries. Neace
returned with his best offensive performance of the season, leading the way for Team 1 with 5 touchdowns. After starting
the game at receiver, Glover returned to his quarterbacking role, and played well, throwing for 4 touchdowns, and running
for several large gains. Berlin, who was benched in favor of Glover after throwing for 11 touchdowns in Week 8, threw
for 2 more in Week 9, but was ineffective largely, leading to his benching. He had a touchdown catch in the second half
also. Chris Hott continued to prove that he is a defensive presence, making several tackles, and adding 2 more interceptions
to his league leading total. Clyde Neace looked better on offense, after taking Week 8 off with a concussion, scoring
a touchdown. He looked a little timid on defense at times, but he continued to play with great intensity. Kenny
Williams, back at 100% in Week 9, added a touchdown and several big plays on offense for Team 1.
Team 2 was led once again by Hall of Famer Jeff Renn. Renn scored 4 touchdowns, and threw for 2 more to lead Team
2 to its fourth win in 6 games this year. Justin Sawicki continued his solid rookie season, continuing to benefit from
Renn's presense on the ground through the air. Sawicki added 5 touchdowns to his league leading total, and added a sack
in the win. Mike Arana continued his solid play, filling in at quarterback for Team 2, throwing for 5 touchdowns, and
scoring another. Arana finally looks to be back to form on defense, and added an interception. Jake Cleek, underutilized
on offense, added an interception for Team 2. Ryan Geib played his most solid offensive game of the season, catching
a few passes in the win. Brian Potts made his HSFL debut, but was used sparingly. He did make a few impressive
tackles in his debut.
