Hobart, IN: The HSFL continued their 2002 season with the league's first games in back to back weekends this
season. While many of the faces on the field were familiar to the league for this season, Chris Hott and John Berlin
missed due to personal issues, while Kyle Gonzales and Josh Coons missed due to injuries suffered while playing for the
Hobart High School team. Week 6 also saw the return of a pair of HSFL Hall of Famers, Tom Phelps and Jake
Ehrhardt.
The game started off with Team 1 jumping on top to an early 3-1 lead. The defense made due for the second
straight week without their defensive star in Coons, but as the first half wore on, the signs that Jeff Renn was
gaining strength were evident. After mounting a nice comeback, Team 2 took a 5-4 lead into the half.
Jeff Renn continued leading a steady Team 2 ground game throughout the ball game, but Team 1 managed to stay close
led by the timeless Bob Glover/Tom Phelps combo. Team 1 kept the game close, and it looked as though they may have had
a chance to win when Jeff Renn was forced to leave the game during overtime. The Team 2 offense spun its wheels
without Renn in their only drive, but the game ended with Justin Sawicki returning a Bob Glover interception for
a touchdown, and giving Team 2 a 13-11 win to extend their season series lead to 3-1 over Team 1.
Quarterback Bob Glover spent most of Saturday either struggling to keep the ball out of the opponents' hands, or frustrated
at his receivers. Glover played arguably his worst game ever, throwing for 9 touchdowns, but also a career high 5 interceptions.
The blame should not be blamed entirely on Glover however, his receivers dropped several passes and the Team 1 offense as
a whole looked upset and ineffective. The one bright spot for Team 1 in Week 6 was the return of Hall of Famer Tom Phelps.
Phelps was Glover's most reliable receiver, and despite dropping his fair share of balls, the game would have been a blow
out had it not been for Phelps. He scored 5 touchdowns, and did a good job to contribute to the Team 1 run defense.
Playing in only his second game of the season, Kenny Williams looked pretty solid for Team 1. He filled in as Glover's
blocking back, a spot that has been occupied by a committee of players with varying success so far this season. Williams
scored 4 touchdowns and also played good defense for Team 1, adding a sack. Josh Neace, hampered by a hamstring injury,
was hardly used by Team 1 on offense, scoring 1 touchdown. Neace played his usual good defense, making a ton of tackles
and intercepting a pass, but reports say the stress of having to carry the defense without Josh Coons may be getting to him.
A knee injury caused Neace to spend the late portion of the game blocking for Glover, and it is unknown how severe the injury
is. Clyde Neace, who has had an overall very solid rookie campaign, played the worst game in his young career.
Neace scored 1 touchdown and had an interception, but dropped seemingly everything that was thrown near him. Neace continued
to help the Team 1 defensive effort, and his teammates believe his offensive game will return to form in his next outing.
Team 2 continued their solid play in Week 6 and took advantage of an off-week from almost every player on the Team 1
squad. Jeff Renn was as dominating as ever, and continues to play ridiculously consistent football this season.
Renn scored 6 touchdowns, threw for 2, and had an interception for Team 2. With quarterback Kyle Gonzales out, Team
1 thought Renn would take the snaps, which he did to start with, but then he began to dominate on the ground, and they made
a move that will be questioned every time it is done from now till the end of time- Mike Arana was given the ball to lead
the Team 2 offense. Team 2 continued to run the majority of the time, but Arana could have been worse at the helm.
He scored 2 touchdowns, threw for 2 more, and had 2 interceptions. Amid a week full of controversy for his tackling
techniques, Justin Sawicki managed to cut down on the controversy surrounding him, but still turn out a solid defensive performance
for Team 2. Sawicki scored 5 touchdowns, and added 2 interceptions in the game. Hall of Famer Jake Ehrhardt made
his return for Team 2 in Week 6, and filled Arana's spot as the secondary runner to Jeff Renn while Arana took the snaps.
Ehrhardt looked good and played with his trademark intensity for Team 2. Jake Cleek played only a half for Team 2, and
was a non-factor for the majority of the game. Cleek shared his playing time with Ryan Geib, who was used primarily
as a blocker and pass rusher, but did not have much of an effect on the outcome of the game.
