Hobart, IN: The HSFL continued its seventh season with the third game of the year on Sunday. After a week
of controversy surrounding the game, and the replacement of superstar Matt Lams, the compensation was determined prior to
the game, and it was Ryan Geib. Now, on paper, this game was a huge mismatch, but as they say "that's why they play
the games".
The offenses got off to an unusually quick start in the game, with Justin Sawicki doing the majority of the damage for
Team 2. There were also several turnovers in the first half, and Team 2 had the ball with a chance to go up 4-2, but
they too turned the ball over, allowing Team 1 to climb back into the game. Team 1 eventually regained the lead and
took a 6-5 lead into the half.
The second half was much better played, as the teams traded points back and forth. Aaron Kratochvil played well
at quarterback in the second half, and Shaun Wehle stepped up for Team 1. When Team 1 reached 12, Team 2 was right behind
with 11, forcing an overtime. During overtime, the teams traded scores back and forth again, all the way to game point
at 14. Team 1 had the first chance to win, but the Team 2 defense pinned them deep off the kickoff and Team 1 went four
plays and turned the ball over to Team 2 with a chance to win and four plays to do it. On third down, Jeff Renn caught
a screen pass and Aaron Kratochvil came behind him to take a lateral and run the ball in for the game winning score.
Team 2 won 15-14.
When word reached the public earlier in the week that Team 1's best player, Matt Lams, would not be in attendance, Team
1 began scrambling to find a replacement. Chris Hott brought Mike Coleman, but when Kenny Williams also backed out,
Team 1 was able to gain Ryan Geib's services for the game from Team 2. Nobody thought the game would be much of a contest
without Lams, but Team 1 surprised everyone, including themselves. The story of the week was Geib. After being
used sparingly in the first two games by Team 2, Geib welcomed the chance to switch over to the other side, even if it was
only for one week. Geib felt as if he had something to prove, and responded to the increased playing time in a big way.
Geib scored a career high 6 touchdowns with his increased offensive time, and was a huge factor for the Team 1 offense.
On defense, Geib helped make up for the loss of Lams by aiding in the run stopping game, and also added an interception.
Bob Glover also stepped up without Lams there, on both sides of the ball. He was very efficient on offense throwing
for 10 touchdowns, and running for another while engineering successful drive after drive. Despite starting the game
on the bench on defense like always, Glover was forced into action to try to stop Justin Sawicki early on, and faired very
well in place of Lams. He kept Sawicki relatively quiet in the second half, and added an interception. With Lams
out, Team 1 knew they had to have a big game from Josh Neace to even have a chance. The two time Pro Bowler had been
off to a slow start this season, but he came up big when Team 1 needed him. Neace got more touches this week, scoring
4 touchdowns and playing a big role in Team 1's defense. Shaun Wehle also picked up the slack in the game.
Shaun picked up the bulk of the carries in place of Lams and ran the ball well to keep the Team 1 attack
balanced. Shaun scored 2 touchdowns, and despite a scary knee injury, he was very effective down the stretch
on defense as well as lead blocking for the rest of the running game. Chris Hott had a solid game as well. Hott had
a big impact on defense, making several key tackles and holding down the Team 2 offense. Hott also had an
increased offensive role, and finally made a contribution. He had a few catches and scored a touchdown. After
being highly touted by in Hott in the week leading up to the game, Mike Coleman made his HSFL debut. As can be predicted
of every rookie, no matter what skill level, Coleman struggled with the adjustment to the HSFL style in his debut. He
made a few catches, but overall was not much of a factor in the outcome.
Team 2 had to be coming into the game with confidence riding high, even to the point of being over confident. They
had a much tougher fight on their hands than they had originally thought, but they ultimately came out with the win.
After a couple disappointing games to start his return tour, Aaron Kratochvil came back in a big way this week. Aaron
regained quarterbacking duties in the second half of the game, and helped get the Team 2 offense back on track.
Aaron threw for 4 touchdowns and scored 2 more. The other half of the Team 2 quarterback by committee is John Berlin.
Berlin played by far his best game of the season, throwing for 5 touchdowns, and even contributing as a receiver, catching
2 more. Justin Sawicki came out of the gate smoking, making several big plays early. He faded a little in the
second half, but still contributed. He scored 4 touchdowns and also added an interception. Jeff Renn continued
his steady play in Week 6. He added to his league leading touchdown total, scoring 3 more. He ran hard as usual,
picking up several yards on the ground, and even played some very good coverage defense. Eric Kratochvil played his
best game of the season as well this week. Eric was used more than ever on the offensive side of the ball, getting several
carries, and scoring 3 touchdowns. Mike Arana had another solid week on the defensive side of the ball, making several
open field tackles. His offensive role has been limited this season, but he did score a touchdown this week. Brian
Potts had another solid game for Team 2. Used primarily as a blocker on offense, and sparingly on defense, Potts made
his contributions when asked to yet again.
Team 2 now leads the season series 2-1. You can vote for the MVP of this game by clicking the blue "take my
